The University of British Columbia (UBC), formerly known as McGill University College of British Columbia, has a well-established tradition of multidisciplinary research since its founding in 1908. This Canadian research institution is considered a top academic authority and often ranks highly among world universities.

The university itself followed a proposal by John Jessop, the then provincial governor of British Columbia, who recognized the need for an institution of higher learning to serve the local area.

As one of the oldest universities in Canada, the institution experienced rapid expansion in the 20th century, significantly expanding its list of degrees focused on medicine, theology and law.

Today, the institution can offer about 500 bachelor's and master's degrees in subjects such as business and technology management, information technology and applied technology, liberal arts and sciences, but also linguistics and translation. Over the years, UBC has launched 1,300 research projects in collaboration with businesses and inspired the creation of 200 new companies.

UBC's 1501-acre campuses are located in downtown Vancouver, a major cultural and economic center of the region, and in the city of Kelowna, located near Okanagan Lake in southern British Columbia. With state-of-the-art sports centers and various student clubs operating on campus, students have the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities from skiing, aviation and archaeology.

The university offers state-of-the-art facilities including the National Laboratory for Particle and Nuclear Physics (TRIUMF), Canada's second largest research library with over 7 million publications, and a traditional Japanese botanical garden.
